NASA Map reveals Antarctica with BedMachine Antarctica
Thanks to NASA’s new tool called BedMachine Antarctica, scientists have been able to get a picture of the terrain of an unexplored continent. A study that combined seismic measurements, radar and other data on Antarctica has allowed scientists to produce a visualization of the land’s hidden features. Vibrations from seismic waves are the most common way for scientists view the landscape under an ice sheet, but these visuals aren’t as detailed as compared with infrared images.
Data sets can now be analyzed in ways that were impossible before. Scientists will be able to predict things about ice and global warming like when it melts and which parts are most vulnerable. What might happen if a small percentage of us melted?
Scientists have found the deepest canyon on Earth, and they’ve done so in the NASA map Antarctica. By studying the flow of ice in the Denman area, researchers discovered that it must be 3,500 meters below sea level to accommodate the volume of water it holds. As a point of comparison, note that the Dead Sea is 432 meters below sea level.
