Messenger will warn of screenshots in chat
Inspired by Snapchat, Meta, then still called Facebook, decided to bring the disappearing messages feature after some user-defined time period. Until now, the app deleted automatically these messages after the time limit, but anyone could keep a copy of them by making a screen recording or taking a screenshot.
In an announcement a few days ago, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said that a message would now appear on the screen. That message will inform users of a screenshot of their conversation taken. An additional piece he stated regarding encrypted conversations, is that GIFS and stickers will now be also available as reactions to messages.
The screenshot warning will appear as a notification in the chat, informing the sender of the screenshot. Additionally, the user who took the screenshot will also receive a notification. This feature will help users avoid any potential privacy breaches or embarrassment. It would be best suitable in cases where the conversation may contain personal or sensitive information.
Users can still take screenshots if they choose to, but the warning serves as a reminder that their conversation partner will be aware of the screenshot. This added transparency helps to build trust and accountability between users. It will ensure that conversations are conducted with the understanding that they may not always be private.
