Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has been mourning the death of his good friend and colleague Paul Allen. He was a visionary who funded numerous scientific and technological projects, arts, and athletic programs. His patronage was also recognized by his partners for his philanthropic endeavors. He had fought a long battle with cancer.
Vulcan Inc. announced the passing of Allen due to complications from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma on Monday afternoon in Seattle, Washington.
Wishes from the company
“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our founder Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft,” said the company he created and of which the billionaire was a major shareholder.
“My brother was a remarkable man, in all respects,” his sister Jodie said in the statement released by Vulcan.
Allen left Microsoft in 1983. Then, he founded and became president of Seattle-based investment firm, which manages resources in culture, real estate, media and sports. Paul Allen was also the owner of the Seattle Seahawks and his philanthropic work is often trumpeted.
“I am devastated by the death of one of my oldest and dearest friends. Paul was a true colleague and friend. Personal computers would not have existed without him,” Bill Gates wrote, saying goodbye.
“Paul Allen’s contribution to the company, the industry and society at large has been particularly significant,” said the Microsoft CEO. “As co-founder of Microsoft, in his own gentle and persistent way, he created extraordinary products, experiences and institutions that changed the world. We learned a lot from Paul – his thirst for learning, his curiosity, his constant focus on high standards: and it is all of these elements that will continue to inspire all of us at Microsoft,” he added, to conclude: “Our thoughts are with Paul’s family and loved ones.”
