New Data Centers for Cloud services
Microsoft announced this week the official launch of a new Data Center hub in Attica. This investment will cover the company’s needs in Southeastern Europe. The deal for the implementation amounts to a total of 400 million which will create a value of 1 billion euros. That is when shared across multiple sectors of the economy. This data center will provide an innovative, secure, and highly scalable way of storing and managing data in cloud computing. It will also serve as a regional information hub for neighboring countries.
Data centers are at the infrastructure of the so-called “cloud,” the technology that’s revolutionizing both software and hardware industries, providing improvements for business and public services. Data storage and exchange are only part of the equation.
The installation of a cluster of data centers in Greece will increase the speed and ease with which local businesses and citizens can harness the potential of the digital world. The Government plans to boost the tech sector number as a percentage of GDP.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis mentioned that “the establishment in a country of a data center by a company like Microsoft elevates it as an investment destination.” The economic reforms implemented over the last decade have gone a long way. Athens is an attractive place for foreign investment..โ The company’s president Brad Smith added from his side. “The largest investment in the 28 years of Microsoft’s presence in your country shows our confidence in Greece, its people, and its government, it is not something we do in many countries.”.
“You’re not just investing in technology but also in a democratic society, because the internet is a forum for a healthy exchange of ideas.” Mr. Mitsotakis also pointed out. He was optimistic that there would be positive effects on employment, small and medium-sized enterprises, scientific research, and the halting of the “brain drain”.
Microsoft’s president also said that the company is focused on creating a secure Data Center in Greece. “Data will be stored in Greece and protected by Greek law,” he stressed. So far, Microsoft has data centers in operation in four countries of the European Union. These are Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Ireland. Three more are under construction in Poland, Italy, and Spain. Greece thus becomes the 8th EU country chosen by Microsoft to transfer and store its cloud data and only the 27th in the world.
The deployment of the cluster of data centers is part of the #GrforGrowth strategic agreement which includes many other actions. The most important is the training and certification of tens of thousands of employees in the private and public sectors. Students and unemployed citizens will benefit as well. In particular, the company plans to train over 20 thousand public employees and 20 thousand from private companies. The aim is to train a total of 100 thousand employees.
Furthermore, a collaboration between Microsoft and the Ministry of Culture is underway. The aim is to promote Greece’s cultural heritage through digital applications. Artificial intelligence and augmented reality will find application in Ancient Olympia.
