Moscow shares space technology

The head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said that Moscow is ready to share its space technology with Turkey.

“It makes sense for these partnerships to develop in the field of space exploration. Turkey is a country that has such ambitions. Russia is a country with ambitions and technology. We are ready to share it with our Turkish colleagues, we discussed various ways of cooperation this morning,” Rogozin told reporters on the sidelines of the MAKS Air Show.

Rogozin also said he proposed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that his agency take over the training of Turkish astronauts at Russia’s Cosmonaut Training Center and the two countries would discuss such an agreement.

Earlier, Rogozin proposed to Erdogan to send a Turkish astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the modern Turkish Republic (in October 2023).

Erdogan accepted the offer and thanked Roscosmos “on behalf of the entire nation,” adding: “Thank you for the work you have done.”

In May 2018, Turkey announced plans to launch a national astronaut training programme from 2023. Ankara plans to invest about $6 billion for this purpose. A year earlier, then-Prime Minister Binali Yildirim had announced that his country was planning to build its own space station.
