Mother meets her dead daughter

Mother meets her dead daughter

Virtual reality is mostly used for gaming in the present but it may provide other uses in the future. One controversial possibility is the use of AI to bring your dead loved ones back so you can see them one last time. This is an unexplored area of human psychology, and it’s difficult to know how people will react.

I Met You is a documentary by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, exploring the use of VR. A grieving mother finds their dead daughter in the world of VR. Some people are not happy with the video and worry it might make us addicted to the virtual world. Those who are grieving in the real one might find it hard to cope.

Jang Ji-sung’s daughter died in 2016. Her name was Nayeon, she was 7 years old and suffered from a terminal illness. It took 8 months for the production team to create this virtual world. They used 3D drawing and motion capture to create an accurate representation of a park and map the movements of an actress. They used all of Nayeon’s digital photo and video archives to deliver a more accurate, authentic version of her character.

Mother’s feedback

Wearing a VR headset, the mother spent an entire day with her virtual daughter playing and spending time with her. The father, brother and sister were able to see what was happening.

“I might have found the place I was looking for. Beacause I met Nayeon and she smiled at me for a little bit- even if it was brief, it felt good. Maybe I needed yesterday’s dream all along.

How will this technology affect the grieving process? Will it help people in the day-to-day process of getting through a death? Is it possible they will become addicted to the digital world and get used to seeing their loved ones all the time? Would you be willing to see a lost loved one again?
