Sales on smartphones and tablets fell

Sales on smartphones and tablets fell | Decline explained

For yet another quarter, sales of both smartphones and tablets declined internationally. Smartphone sales dropped by about 6% and tablet sales by about 8.6%.

In Q3 this year, 355.2 million smartphones were sold when it was previously 377.8 million in the third quarter of 2017. IDC anticipates a rebound in the market, but that remains uncertain.

In this yearโ€™s third quarter, 36.4 million tablets were sold, compared to 39.9 million units in the same quarter last year (down 8.6%). According to IDC, “the tablet market now resembles the desktop personal computer (PC) market more than ever before.” Both are losing money and have declining sales.

According to industry analysts, this decline can be attributed to several factors.

One major factor is saturation in the market. With many people already owning a smartphone or tablet, there is less demand for these devices. Additionally, as smartphones and tablets have become more advanced and more expensive, consumers are keeping their devices for longer periods of time, reducing the need to upgrade as frequently.

Another factor is the shift towards other forms of technology, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers. These devices are becoming increasingly popular and are taking market share away from smartphones and tablets.

Additionally, the increasing cost of smartphones and tablets has made them less affordable for many people. Despite these challenges, the smartphone and tablet market is expected to continue to be a significant and important market in the future.
