New Sim card exploit
A new vulnerability known as Simjacker has been discovered. Researchers were able to create a rogue app that used your phone’s SIM card and spy on you in the process. Simjacker, a software and hardware company, covers all mobile devices and allows users to generate revenue in whatever way they see fit. With these services, this can affect over 1 billion devices globally. The vulnerability developed by Simjacker’s parent company, appears to have ties with the government for tracking people more effectively. An attack can recover IMEIs.
Some SIM Cards provided by GSM Providers may contain the S T Browser, found in the SIM Application Toolkit. SimJacker has been used in previous years to send binary messages over text to people’s phones. It would then let them determine the whereabouts of a possible criminal. Several technology providers in 30 countries recieved high ratings.
The report discovered thatSimjaker tracks individualsevery daywith certain numbers hundreds of times over a 7-day period. The process is simple, tracking a handset. It requires a cheap GSM modem to send a message to a SIM card containing information about the person. Then information are of use for various marketing strategies intended for specific angles. Phones exchange information and transfer it to the hackers when idle. This means when the user doesn’t make voice-calls, send text messages and store important information. The attack is based on older technology and some solutions are possible. However, until there are full solutions put into place and a complete removal of the SIMjacker, this threat remains present.
