Vulnerability makes computers slower | Variant 4
The recent Variant 4 vulnerability works similarly to Spectre, technically. It can exploit the ‘Speculative Execution Mechanism’ of processors. It is allowing hackers potential access to sensitive, personal information carried by the affected device. Intel has rated this as a ‘moderate’ issue because it exploits vulnerabilities that have already been addressed by software vendors and OEMs. The performance of the processors will be affected by the firmware updates of the CPUs that will follow, as was the case with Spectre. But end users and even system administrators have the ability to choose whether to focus on the security or performance.
Customers will have the option of turning the coming mitigation off or on. All industry software partners are expected to follow the same pattern of defaulting to off. For that reason we haven’t seen any performance impact. When turned on it would reportedly take a 2%-8% performance hit, based on the overall scores of one benchmark tool, such as SYSmark.
