Overwatch League Season 2
The second season of Overwatch League is off to a roaring start with 13 million viewers tuning in for its opening week.
The viewership of this year’s event increased by 30%. The first season finals attracted 10.8 million viewers, but did not satisfy the organizers of the event who invested a lot of money. Though not aย particularly satisfactory number, the company was still clearly happy with its progress.
The esports-style event started its second season on February 14 and this year’s championship had 20 total competing teams.
Compared to other esports leagues, The Overwatch League is considered to be very different, following the NFL and NBA models is a unique thing because of how they are organized and even provide players contracts.
What has especially disheartened the video game sector is why earlier this month, Activision Blizzard made massive layoffs, laying off 800 employees, which isn’t a small number.
Some of these jobs were in the esports industry
It is also worth noting that Activision Blizzard recently cancelled the pro-gaming event for Heroes of the Storm, which disappointed many.
Despite the many errors made by the company, Overwatch League is still going strong. It has experienced an upsurge and you can’t help but recognize it, even if you’re a die-hard critic of the company
Overwatch League’s second season was a big investment for Activision Blizzard, and it looks like the huge effort is returning in the form of increased contracts with new teams. These contracts collectively result in large sums of money that undoubtedly rival offers made by traditional sports.
