PC hard drives replace floppy disks
These drives have been around for decades and we’ve never seen anything like the floppy disk’s demise. There might be a time that we do experience an event like this but the HDDs won’t be going anywhere just yet.
As hard drive technology changes, some HDDs that were once used will not be needed anymore. This will cause a drop in hard drive systems and an increase in the amount of unused hardware. However, it is certain that computers with mechanical drives will remain in circulation for a long time to come. This information comes from Nidec, a Japanese manufacturer of HDD spinning mechanisms and the reseller of 80% of the disks in circulation worldwide. This means that they should have more knowledge about the market than most, which is why it’s safe to conclude that this information makes sense.
NAND memory prices have been dropping steadily over the past few years. This is due to increased competition in the market and advancements in production capabilities. As a result, SSDs have become much more affordable for different types of users and business owners. New systems are being designed with SSDs instead of HDDs, allowing for a higher performance in the same physical size. The prices of these new SSDs have now dropped significantly. We’re seeing 1TB ones becoming available for just 100 euros. Nevertheless, there is no way around the fact that our capacity and price concerns will eventually lead to the death of HDDs.
