The virtual world of the Darknet

A website selling drugs, fake docs and even counterfeit money on the Darknet – a supposedly secret internet where users can only be found with specialist browsers – has been closed down by police.

Authorities estimated that DarkMarket was the world’s most extensive “Darknet” marketplace. With over 500,000 registered users and more than 2,400 sellers, it had a broader customer base than any other illicit site.

The cafe has had more than 320,000 transactions over the course of its history, and these often include Bitcoin as well as Monero. The total amount is 140 million euros.

The prosecution argued that this platform was mainly used to sell all kinds of drugs.

“Counterfeit money, stolen or forged credit card data, anonymous SIM cards” and even computer viruses were also sold there. As the prosecution warns, this information can now be used for further investigations of resellers, coordinators and other parties.
