Recycling robot
MIT and Yale University have devised a pioneering method through soft robotics. The robot is able to distinguish, select and sort recyclable materials by touch. For example, it can distinguish paper, plastic and glass with absolute efficiency, and puts the rest of the waste materials in the trash bin.
This robot is able to differentiate between materials without the need for machine vision. It uses her natural understanding of colors and objects, which is why this system can be much more affordable than other options. since this robot works by touch and through touch it understands objects.
RoCycle
The RoCycle system the robot uses relies on touch alone to detect objects, sorting them by size and shape.
One of the study’s researchers, Daniela Rus from MIT University, said. “Many consider the machine vision, objectively, as an advanced system. Unfortunately, at present it will not be able to work properly in the field of recycling. However, as time progresses and technology improves, this should one day become a reality”, It also specifically says that it doesn’t have the human perception to understand the difference between materials and in fact finds that its inaccuracies are quite a few through soft robotics and identifies the object through touch.”

This study found that RoCycle’s efficiency is as high as 85% which means it can recognise and classify three materials by touch alone when in a stationary position. Initial testing of RoCycle showed it was effective in gathering the useful materials and forwarding them to the next step. This was done by placing them on a conveyor belt, then sending the non-useful items to a trash bin.
