A phone that will fold by Samsung

A phone that will fold by Samsung

The Galaxy Note 8 launched a month ago and we already expect the unveiling of its successor next year. This follows our tradition of updating the flagship model every 12 months.

These plans of the company have come not from anonymous sources but from the mobile president of Samsung, who said that in 2018 the company wants to release a phone using flexible OLED technology they developed.

The head of the division made it clear that there are still some hurdles to maneuver around. “We are geting closer to releasing one of these devices next year. Certainly, we’ll figure out what our best strategy is and overcome those challenges. There’s no point in divulging any information about the device before it launches.”

Folding phones are one of the latest smartphone trends, and the question is: when will Samsung release a “fold phone”? While they’re coming, analysts don’t believe that they’ll become popular until mass production is made possible. The question on everyone’s minds has been around for a while now — back in 2013. Back then, the company unveiled a prototype device that had a flexible display, called Youm.

LG is also pursuing this technology and patented a tablet that folds. An example of this came out earlier this year that looked like a mobile phone when folded, but operates as a tablet when expanded. China’s Lenovo unveiled the Folio, a similar tablet with a 7.8-inch screen that folded to become a mobile phone with a 5.5-inch screen and they did not announce any release date.

For years the idea of a phone that can function as both a mobile and a tablet has been something of an “unattainable dream” for smartphones. We don’t know which one will be able to find that “Holy Grail” first, but it’ll no doubt be interesting to find out!
