The Sound of Light
This project pushed the boundaries of how humans can train artificial intelligence to read images and create new soundtracks. Participants had to record the Northern Lights in Norway. Using a Huawei Mate 20 Pro that was running a special AI system. They should, then, find the key elements of the video and turn them into music. These were the primary audio tracks of the musical symphony in collaboration with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
In Tromso, Norway Northern Lights hunter Kjetil Skogli and award-winning composer Mark Sayfritz searched for and filmed the Northern Lights. Mark created a musical symphony that was based on his video. The AI system running in the Mate 20 Pro helped make it. After finishing with the composition, James Shearman received the orchestral music. As one of the world’s best conductors, he arranged a symphony performance that would take place at Brahms Hall in Vienna. James Shearman commented, “My role as a conductor is to shape, inspire and guide the musical performance. With the help of AI, this is now a reality. To make it so that we can all feel the Northern Lights communicating with us through music.”
As this journey unfolded, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro’s AI capabilities have been used as inspiration to set new standards of expectations.
Composer Mark Sayfritz said, “With the introduction of AI into my music, it opened up a whole new chapter of creative possibilities. For that reason now I can feed video from the Northern Lights into the AI system and it will analyze things like color, dimension, shape and speed. It then creates variations of my music parts according to what it sees. So when the AI system recognizes a particularly jarring light, it can adjust the sounds to reflect that intensity in the musical composition. I can then incorporate those elements into the symphony.”
