Tablet purchase fee doubled
A recent amendment doubled the fee for tablet purchases. The change came alongside a new charge for all other types of purchases. These include for example mobile phones, computers and consumable items.
The law mandates that if you plan to make a purchase from Greece, you now have to pay a 2% tax on any tablet with more than 4GB of RAM. The bill also includes copyright management changes in an effort to protect intellectual property. When the bills passed, only a small fee was necessary.ย In the end, though, a last-minute amendment by Ms. Koniordou added twice as much work onto tablets while scrapping the tax on mobile smartphone devices The culture minister said that the charge on smartphone devices was withdrawn because of pending lawsuits.
The law also uses technology to tax electronic devices. The level of the levy used to be higher for phone calls and computers, but this law adjusts it. There will be, as predicted, a 6% surcharge on electronic video and audio recording devices and electronic storage disks over 1 TB. A 4% surcharge is also foreseen for photocopiers, scanners, printers, photocopying paper and electronic storage media up to 1 TB. The surcharge on a computer remains at $2.00
