Deep Blue | Computer beats man | Techday, February 10th
On this TECHDAY in history, on February 10th 1996, the first-ever traditional chess match between Garry Kasparov and IBM’s Deep Blue took place. Deep Blue became the first machine to win a chess game against world champion Garry Kasparov, under regular time controls. After that though, Kasparov tied with the machine two times, and defeated it three, winning the overall match.
In 1997 however, the computer defeated Kasparov in a six-game match. It was the first time that a reigning world champion had been knocked off their pedestal by a computer opponent in tournament play.
To note, the system run on an sole-purposed IBM supercomputer. Development began in 1985 under a different name, ChipTest, by Carnegie Mellon University. When moved to IBM, was it, then, renamed on 1989. The tough match with Kasparov was actually the first game attempted by the machine! Amazing!
