On this TECHDAY in history, on September 11th 1939, Charles Matthew “Chuck” Geschke was born. He was a businessman who helped to develop computer science in the U.S. He is mainly known for being the co-founder (alongside John Warnock) of Adobe Inc. and for co-developing the PDF format for documents.

Adobe started in 1982 in Warnock’s garage, named after a creek that ran close by. Geschke served for years as Adobe’s CEO, and as the president of the company, until his retirement in 2000. He was also co-chairman of Adobe’s board until 2017.

Adobe’s software products have had a significant impact on the graphic design, publishing, and printing industries. Geschke and Warnock were inducted into the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame in 2007 and received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2011.

Geschke retired as president and chief operating officer of Adobe in 2000, but remained on the company’s board of directors until 2009. He continues to be in the tech industry as an advisor and mentor to startups and young entrepreneurs.
