PC-GR TECHDAY 14 July Naming of mp3

Naming of MP3 | Techday, July 14thΒ

On this TECHDAY in history, on July 14th 1995, MP3 was practically born. Its development team unanimously decided on the name of the extension of music files, compressed with this standard: .mp3.

That is the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 compression algorithm, or MP3 for short. It prevailed from the second half of the 1990s up to the introduction of MP4. The MPEG-1 (Moving Pictures Expert Group Phase 1) standard, developed in 1988, for audio and video files, based on the philosophy of the JPEG image file compression algorithm.

The compression technique’s name, used in MP3 files, is the psychoacoustic compression. It removes certain parts of the audio that are not audible to the human ear, resulting in a smaller file size without a significant loss of quality. These files can be played on a wide range of devices, including computers, smartphones, and portable music players. Due to its popularity, music streaming services and other digital media platforms adopted the MP3 files widely.

However, it should be noted that due to the lossy nature of the compression, the audio quality of an MP3 file is not as good as the original uncompressed audio.
