GameCube launch | Techday, September 14th
On this TECHDAY in history, on September 14th 2001, Nintendo’s newest home video game console was released in the Japanese market. Its name was GameCube. It was a 6th generation video game console and Nintendo 64’s successor. Its main competition was Playstation 2 by Sony, and Xbox by Microsoft. People were mixed on their opinions of the Gamecube console. Some found it to be impressive for its controller, extensive software library, and high-quality games, while others felt that it was lacking in regards to multimedia features. It was also criticised for the design of its exterior.
Despite its strong lineup of games, the GameCube struggled to compete with its main rivals, the Sony PlayStation 2 and the Microsoft Xbox. It sold 21.74 million units worldwide, making it the least successful of the sixth generation consoles. However, it still has a dedicated fan base and many of its games continue to be popular to this day.
