On this TECHDAY in history, on April 15th 1982, the General Electric Company (GE) was made, when Edison General Electric (started by Thomas Edison in 1890) and the Thomson-Houston Electric Company merged. When the Dow Jones Industrial Average was first formed, GE was one of the original 12 companies listed. Until 2021, the company operated in a variety of projects including power, aviation, digital industry, renewable energy, additive manufacturing, locomotives, and venture capital and finance, but has nowadays focused its efforts on the first four sectors.

The Edison General Electric Company and the Thomson-Houston Electric Company were two of the leading electrical companies in the late 19th century.

Before the merger, Edison’s company primarily focused on the development and production of electrical systems and equipment. Thomson-Houston primarily focused on the development and production of electric lighting systems. Both companies had achieved significant success in their respective fields and were leaders in the emerging electrical industry.

In the years following the merger, GE continued to expand and diversify its operations, entering new markets and developing new technologies. Today, the company is a global leader in a wide range of industries, including energy, healthcare, transportation, and technology. Known for its innovation, it has made significant contributions to the development of modern electricity and other technological advances.
