TECHDAY 16 April 1971 Introduction of “File Transfer Protocol”

Introduction of the File Transfer Protocol | Techday, April 16th

On this TECHDAY in history, April 16th 1971, the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) was introduced to the network. several years before the description of TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) that would lead to the creation of the Internet, file transport was limited to the few hosts on the ARPANET network. It would take more than a decade and successive RFCs before FTP took its final form.

The File Transfer Protocol is a standard communication protocol that was developed and used for the transport of computer files from a server to a client on a computer network. FTP was first introduced in the 1970s and became one of the first successful internet protocols. It was originally developed as a way for researchers to share files, but it quickly became a widely-used tool for transferring files over the internet.

One of the main advantages is its simplicity and widespread adoption. Clients and servers are available for most operating systems, users can transfer files between different platforms. FTP is also suitable for transferring large files, as it supports resuming of interrupted transfers and efficient use of network resources.

However, it has some limitations, the lack of encryption for data transfer and the need for a separate control connection. These issues have led to the development of more secure file transfer protocols, such as SFTP and FTPS. Despite these limitations, FTP remains a widely-used tool for transferring files over the internet.
