TECHDAY 18 April A megabit chip

A megabit chip| IBM Model 3090 | Techday, April 18thΒ

On this TECHDAY in history, on April 18th 1986, IBM became the first to use a megabit chip, a memory chip that could store 1 million bits of information, in their Model 3090. This was a big step forward for the computer industry. The announcement was an obvious significant victory for American companies, whose work was, at the very beginning, thought as inferior to that of the Japanese electronics industry.

The Model 3090 was based on IBM’s System/360 architecture and used transistor technology. It was available in several configurations, with options for different levels of performance and memory capacity.

One of the key features of the Model 3090 was its high processing power. It would achieve this power through the use of multiple central processing units (CPUs). Additional CPUs could configure the Model 3090 to further increase its processing power.

In terms of memory, it had a maximum capacity of 4 GB and could be expanded to 8 GB with the use of additional memory modules. It also had a large number of input/output (I/O) channels, allowing it to connect to a wide range of peripheral devices such as tape drives and disk drives.

This was just a snapshot on the presentation of the techday series. Gather more information on the matter. Indulge into the history by further reading more.
