Registration-day for Yahoo.com | Techday, January 18th
On this TECHDAY in history, on January 18th 1995, the “yahoo.com” domain was registered online. Stanford graduates Jerry Young and David Philo created Yahoo.com. It was the most famous web portal, directory and search engine for several years and evolved into one of the world’s largest Internet service packages.
Yahoo is actually a backronym for Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle or Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle. Hierarchical meant the database’s layered subcategories, while oracle meant the source of knowledge and wisdom, because of it being a web directory and later a search engine. By officious, Yahoo would be the perfect tool for office workers, used for surfing at work.
Yahoo’s most lucrative years were the 1990s. Throughout the decade stocks price multiplied and sson became the most popular point for web users. The dot-bubble unfortunately busted on the turn of the century and stock prizes plunged reaching an iverwhelming low for the history of the company.
