NASA’s soft landing on the Moon | Surveyor 1 landing on the Ocean of Storms | Techday, June 2nd
Surveyor 1 was launched on the 30th of May 1966, from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at Cape Canaveral, Florida, and it landed succesfully on the Ocean of Storms, on the Moon, on this TECHDAY in history, on June 2nd of the same year, just a few days after the launch. Surveyor 1 was the first lunar soft-lander mission for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This mission gathered data on the surface of the moon that would be necessary for future crewed missions.
Surveyor 1 transmitted 11,237 still photos of the lunar surface to Earth by using a TV camera and a sophisticated radio-telemetry system. After landing, the spacecraft also took measurements of the mechanical properties of the lunar soil, and it used its laser reflector to bounce laser beams back to Earth, which was used to make precise measurements of the Moon’s distance from Earth.
