Chrome launch | First beta version released | Techday, September 2nd
On this TECHDAY in history, on September 2nd 2008, Google presented the first beta version of its own Web browser, which came to face Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer, claiming a big piece of a huge pie. It was the well-known Chrome, which nowadays is used by millions worldwide. At the same time, Google began to make a large part of the source code available in the form of the open source project “Chromium”.
The beta version of Chrome featured a minimalist user interface, with the address bar and search bar combined into one omnibox, allowing users to easily search or navigate to a website. Additionally, Chrome introduced the concept of “tabbed browsing,” which allowed users to have multiple web pages open in one browser window, making it easier to switch between them.
After the beta version of Chrome release, Google continued to improve and update the browser. The company recurrently added new features and addressing bugs. In December 2008, the stable version of Chrome released, quickly becaming among the most popular browsers in the world. Today, Chrome is available on multiple platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.
