Apollo 11 landing on the Moon | Giant leap for mankind | Techday, July 20th
On this TECHDAY in history, on July 20th 1969, Eagle, as was named the Apollo 11 Lunar Module became the first vehicle on the moon. It successfully landed in the Moon, in the area known as the Sea of Tranquility. Its Commander was Neil Armstrong and the pilot of the lunar module was Buzz Aldrin. Six hours after the module’s landing, Neil Armstrong took the first steps on Earth’s satellite, becoming the first human ever to do so, and said one of his most famous quotes: “That’s one small step for man. One giant leap for humanity.”
The landing was not without its challenges. The Lunar Module’s descent engine had to burn longer than expected to avoid a landing site filled with boulders. Armstrong manually took control of the module and successfully landed it in a location later named the Sea of Tranquility. After spending a total of 21.5 hours on the lunar surface, the Eagle lifted off to rendezvous with Columbia in lunar orbit.
The successful landing of Apollo 11 was seen as a major achievement for the United States, and it marked the end of the Cold War space race between the US and the Soviet Union. The mission also sparked renewed interest in space exploration and paved the way for future manned and unmanned missions to the Moon and beyond.
