TECHDAY 21 March The first Tweet takes flight!

The first Tweet takes flight! | Techday, March 21st

On this TECHDAY in history, on March 21st 2006, the founder of Twitter and Silicon Valley legend Jack Dorsey, made the world’s first (non-automated)  tweet. The humble post read: “just setting up my twttr.”

Developed by podcast company Odeo, the company used the Twitter prototype as an internal messaging service until its public release in July 2006.

Even though Twitter’s growth was slow at first, it gained momentum when South by Southwest featured it prominently in 2007. During that conference, the number of tweets per day tripled.

Fun fact, at the time, Twitter was a small startup company and not many people were using the service. In fact, the word “tweet” wasn’t even part of the common lexicon yet. It wasn’t until several years later, when Twitter gained widespread popularity, that the word “tweet” became synonymous with posting a message on the platform.

In the beginning, Twitter was primarily used as a way for people to send short updates about their day-to-day lives to their friends and followers. However, it quickly evolved into a platform for celebrities, politicians, and businesses to connect with their fans and customers. Rapid growth ensued and by early 2010, there were more than 50 million tweets per day.
