On this TECHDAY in history, on October 21st 1998, Nintendo’s portable game console is getting a colourful makeover. To note, the first release of the console was nine years ago. The Game Boy Color, with a palette of 32,768 colors, launched initially in Japan, and on the following month in Europe and the US. The screen displayed up to 56 colours at the same time. Although the device’s release was initially in five basic colours, it supplemented with many more – in line with Nintendo’s standards – with multi-colour versions, including some transparent or with metallic colours. GB Color, in its four years of release, welcomed more than 500 game titles.
The Game Boy was a huge success and sold over 118 million units worldwide. It was also the first console to sell over 100 million units. The Game Boy’s success was largely due to its portability, affordability, and the wide variety of games available. Some of the most popular games for the Game Boy included Tetris, Super Mario Land, and Pokemon Red and Blue.
The Game Boy’s success also led to the development of several hardware revisions, including the Game Boy Pocket and the Game Boy Color. The Game Boy was eventually succeeded by the Game Boy Advance in 2001. Despite its age, the Game Boy and its games continue to be popular among retro gaming enthusiasts today.
