Nintendo 64 Launch | Techday, June 23rd
On this TECHDAY in history, on June 23rd 1996, Nintendo launched its 64-bit game console in Japan. The N64 was the last 5th generation (Sony Playstation, Sega Saturn, Atari Jaguar) game console to hit the market and also the most technologically advanced. With an aggressive pricing policy, the N64 was cheaper than its competition and became an instant favorite in the US and Europe, where it began to be released in September 1996 and March 1997 respectively.
It was also the first console to feature true 3D graphics and analog stick. The N64 had a library of over 380 games, known for its iconic titles such as Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and GoldenEye 007. The N64 was also one of the last major consoles to use cartridges instead of CDs. This was a disadvantage for the console as it limited the storage capacity of games and made them more expensive to produce.
Despite this, the N64 was a commercial success, selling over 32 million units worldwide. The N64 was also the last console to be developed and released by Nintendo before the launch of the GameCube in 2001.
