Windows 95 release | Techday, August 24th
On this TECHDAY in history, on August 24th 1995, Windows 95 was released. It was the version with the most significant graphical environment upgrade from a previous version of Microsoft’s operating system. Windows 95 would be Microsoft’s first huge success. It made it to the top of the OS market within its first year of release, and completely displacing IBM’s OS/2. It remained in circulation for three years until its replacement came along, Windows 98. During this time it received two Service Packs. They had corresponding extensions to the range of supported hardware and other minor improvements.
Windows 95 brought support for 32-bit hardware and preemptive multitasking, which allowed for better performance and stability. Its release was a major event in the computer industry and was accompanied by a large marketing campaign. The operating system received wide consumer adoption and became one of the most successful versions of Windows. It was succeeded by Windows 98 in 1998.
