First Telegram sent! | Techday, May 24th
On this TECHDAY in history, on May 24th 1844, the first telegram was sent. In a demonstration in front of members of the Congress, Samuel F. B. Morse conveyed the first telegraphic message over an experimental line from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, to his partner Alfred Vail. The message, taken from the Bible, Numbers 23:23 and recorded on a paper tape, had suggested to Morse Annie Ellsworth, the young daughter of a friend, telegraphed back to the Capitol by Vail a moment later.
The telegram contained the message “What hath God wrought?”, sent to demonstrate the practicality of Morse’s new invention, the Morse code.
The telegraph was a significant technological advancement in the 1800s, as it allowed people to communicate over long distances almost instantly. Prior to the telegraph, the only way to communicate quickly over long distances was by using a system of semaphores or messenger pigeons. The telegraph revolutionized communication and played a significant role in the development of the modern communication systems we have today.
Telegrams were widely in use until the mid-20th century, gradually replaced by more advanced communication technologies such as the telephone and the internet. However, telegrams still hold a special place in history and are sometimes suitable for ceremonial or nostalgiciac purposes.
