Hubble Telescope first deployed | Techday, April 25th
The $2.5 billion Hubble Space Telescope was deployed into space from the Space Shuttle Discovery on this TECHDAY, on April 25th 1990. It was the first ever major orbiting observatory, named after American astronomer Edwin P. Hubble. This project was seven years behind schedule and over budget. Also, when it finally reached orbit, the primary mirror found to be flawed. However, correcting optics were later installed. The telescope has now been developed to provide high quality images in a way otherwise impossible, because of the atmospheric effects on earth.
One of the most significant achievements of the Hubble Space Telescope has been its ability to provide astronomers with detailed images of celestial objects. These images have helped scientists learn more about the age, size, and composition of objects in the universe. For example, with the telescope they would study the atmospheres of planets in our solar system and to search for evidence of water on other planets and moons.
The Hubble Space Telescope has also made important contributions to our understanding of the expansion of the universe and the discovery of dark energy. In 2011, the telescope measured the expansion rate of the universe to an accuracy of 7%! This result has helped scientists better understand the nature of dark energy and its role in the evolution of the universe.
