IBM System/23 release | Techday, July 28th
On this TECHDAY in history, on July 28th 1981, the IBM System/23 Datamaster was released, only weeks before the release of the IBM-PC, that would forever change the computer market. The System/23 was a desktop computer that was an evolution of IBM’s efforts in small all-in-one systems, which had begun as early as 1975.
The IBM Datamaster, apart from being a very targeted system, was also the last step in the acquisition of the appropriate know-how by the IBM team for the effective design of a truly personal computer, such as the IBM-PC, and the proper use of Intel’s x86 architecture.
The System/23 was aimed at small businesses, schools, and other organizations that needed a reliable, easy-to-use computer system for basic tasks such as word processing, accounting, and data management. It was also popular among individuals and home users looking for a personal computer.
The System/23 was succeeded by the IBM System/36, which was released in 1983. The System/36 was a more powerful and expandable system that could run larger and more complex applications. Despite this, IBM System/23 still in use in some business, due to its simplicity and reliability.
