The first color film | Techday, May 28th
On this TECHDAY in history, on May 28th 1929, the first color film “On with the show!” premiered. It was an American Pre-Code musical film released by Warner Bros. Filmed in two-strip Technicolor, the film is noted as being the first all-talking, all-color feature length film.
Warner Bros. promoted the film as being in natural color. The pioneers of sound were the first to introduce full talking combined with full color. Adverts proclaimed ‘Now color takes to the screen’.
Fun fact, there have been movies some years before that but not with the Technicolor technology. The introduction of Technicolor brought a new level of vibrancy and realism to the movies. Prior to this, films aqcuired color through a variety of methods, such as tinting and toning, which were not always very effective.
The early technicolor films were expensive to produce due to the need for double the amount of film stock and processing. This, along with the Great Depression brought a decrease in technicolor film production and in 1936 technicolor started to develop 3 strip technicolor which was more cost-effective and easier to use for the film makers, which in turn help the technicolor to be more successful and widely used in the film industry.
