Sega Genesis launch | Techday, October 29th
On this TECHDAY in history, on October 29th 1988, the 16-bit, 4th generation Sega game console went on sale in the Japanese market. It was the Sega MegaDrive or Sega Genesis (as was known in the US), succeeding the popular Master System. In May of the following year, it was also introduced to the American market and in November 1990 to the European market. The MegaDrive was Sega’s most successful console, especially in Europe, at a time of intense competition from other consoles and from the booming home computer games market.
The Genesis initially marketed as a competitor to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and it managed to gain a significant market share in North America and Europe, thanks in part to its strong third-party support and the inclusion of a headphone jack for the controller, which allowed for stereo sound.
The Sega Genesis production discontinued in 1997, succeeded by the Sega Saturn. Despite this, it continues to have a dedicated fanbase, re-released in various forms over the years.
