First succesful mobile phone call | Techday, April 3rd
On this TECHDAY in history, on April 3rd 1973, Martin Cooper of Motorola made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment. He called his business rival, Dr. Joel S. Engel who worked at Bell Labs. Thus began a new age for human communication, with profound impact on society and human relationships.
Cooper, general manager for the systems division at Motorola at the time, made the call using a prototype of what would eventually become the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, the first commercially available cellular phone.
The prototype that Cooper used was about the size of a brick and weighed about 2.5 pounds. It took about 10 hours to fully charge the device, and it could only be used for about 30 minutes before the battery needed to be recharged. Despite its limitations, the prototype was a revolutionary device that paved the way for the development of modern mobile phones.
The call marked the beginning of the modern era of mobile communication, and it set the stage for the development of more advanced and user-friendly mobile phones. Today, mobile phones are an integral part of daily life for billions of people around the world, and they continue to evolve and improve with each passing year.
