TECHDAY 30 December WonderSwan Color release

WonderSwan Color release in Japan | Techday, December 30th

On this TECHDAY in history, on December 30th 2000, Bandai marks the WonderSwan Color release in Japan. A year earlier the portable gaming consoles’ black and white version had been released, aiming to compete with Nintendo’s Gameboy. With the WonderSwan Color, in particular, Bandai was “targeting” the market share of the Neo Geo Pocket Color and Gameboy Color.

Along with other models, the colored version and the SwanCrystal, the WonderSwan, sixth generation of game consoles, discontinued in 2003. Its lifspan was short and didn’t continue even outside of Japan. Overall, it presented a decent competition in this division market, while being on the lower price point side.

Through the generations, it featured some improvements such as battery life and graphics, marking millions of units sold. In the Japanese market the WonderSwan Color maintained a steady 8% share market, but gradually was marginalised by the GameBoy Advance.
