The search for life | NASA launches the Phoenix Mars | Techday, August 4th
On this TECHDAY in history, on 2007, the Phoenix Mars lander was launched by NASA. It would be the first spacecraft that touched down on the “arctic” region of Mars, with the goals of searching for water (even in ice form) and assessing the possibility of the existence of a habitable zone in the vicinity.
It had equipped, among others, a microscope, cameras and a chemistry lab. With the data collected by the lander, researchers would study the planet’s geology, geochemistry, and climate. They would search for evidence of past or present life on Mars.
The Phoenix mission was a success. It met all of its primary science goals and provided valuable data, used in future missions to Mars. It was NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory operation. The Canadian Space Agency and the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory made significant contributions.
