Google founding | Techday, September 4th
On this TECHDAY in history, on September 4th 1998, Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Green, who were still students at Stanford University. It would enter the stock market six years later, on 29 August 2004. The American company, is now multinational and focuses in many technological sectors offering a big number of diverse products.
The name Google comes from an anagram of the word Googol, which signifies the number “1 followed by 100 zeros”. A term used for the most ambitious search engine on the World Wide Web, was the result of the 1996 thesis of Page and Green. Originally, this search engine was called “Back Rub”.
Google’s initial focus was on creating a search engine that would provide more relevant results than those offered by existing search engines at the time. Page and Brin developed a new algorithm called PageRank, which used the number and quality of backlinks to a website to determine its relevance. This algorithm proved to be highly effective and helped Google quickly gain market share in the search industry.
Today, Google is one of the world’s largest and most valuable companies, with a market capitalization of over $1 trillion. The company has expanded its services beyond search to include products such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Drive, and YouTube, among others.
