First presentation of Android | Techday, November 5th
On this TECHDAY in history, on November 5th 2007, took place the first presentation of the Android platform, an operating system for mobile devices. At the same time, a consortium of 48 companies (telecom, software and hardware) announced the creation of the Open Handset Alliance, responsible for its support and promotion.
The OHA was a group of technology companies, led by Google, that aimed to develop open standards for mobile devices. At the time, the main mobile operating systems were proprietary and controlled by a few companies, such as Apple and Nokia.Google designed the original platform.
The Android code was based on the Linux operating system. Apart from being a largely open standard, the main reason for Android’s success is its flexibility. The Android platform has found application in dozens of consumer devices beyond smartphones, such as TVs, game consoles and cameras.
Google released the Android source code under the Apache License, which allowed anyone to use, modify, and distribute the software. This made it possible for other companies to create their own versions of Android and for developers to create apps that could run on any Android device.
