Birthday of Louis Jean Lumiere | Cinematographe Lumiere | Techday, October 5th
On this TECHDAY in history, on October 5th 1864, Louis Jean Lumiere was born in France. He was an engineer, inventor and industrialist, who, alongside his brother, Auguste, invented groundbreaking motion-picture equipment, most notably the “Cinematographe”, a machine with two functions as a camera and a projector. The name has greek roots, derives from the phrase “writing in movement”.
Both brothers patented this machine with a probable inspiration by Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope, but with some improvements. The two brothers are considered by many to be the fathers of cinema.
Fun fact, the first screening of a film took place on March 1895 for a small audience. Two hundred members of the “Society for the Development of the National Industry” participated in the presentation of the projected film. The main theme of the conference was the developments in the photography industry.
