Telegraph changes the world | First public demonstration by Samuel Morse | Techday, January 6th
On this TECHDAY in history, on January 6th 1838, Samuel Morse publicly demonstrated the telegraph for the first time. During the 1890s, Morse Code was, primarily, used for most international communication. At one end of the telegraph wire an electromagnetic current is used. These pulses travel across the wire and are, then, transcribed on the other end by a similar electromagnet.
The telegraph was a revolutionary invention that reached the height of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. While it had largely been replaced by the telephone, fax or email, it wasn’t until 2006 when Western Union (possibly the most famous “telegram” company) announced they would be halting this service.
Fun fact, Samuel Morse was, first of all, an established portrait painter! In his middle age, he contibuted to the invention of the single wire telegraph system with the European standard.
