Birthday of Jack Kilby | Father of Integrated Circuit | Techday, November 8th
On this TECHDAY in history, on November 8th 1923, Jack Kilby, Nobel Prize-winning electrical engineer and inventor of the first integrated circuit in 1958, was born in Missouri, USA.
He attended the University of Illinois, where he received his degree in Electrical Engineering, and went on to the University of Wisconsin, where he completed his post-graduate studies in 1950. Eight years later he was hired by Texas Instruments, where he invented one of the most important components of modern computers, the integrated circuit.
He then began working as an engineer at various companies, including Centralab, where he worked on transistors, and Texas Instruments, where he invented the IC.
In 2000, Kilby was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the IC. He also received numerous other awards and honors throughout his career. These included the National Medal of Science, the IEEE Medal of Honor, and the Kyoto Prize.
Kilby continued to work on various projects until his death on June 20, 2005. His invention of the IC has had a profound impact on the world, leading to the development of modern computers and other electronic devices, and has made possible the information age we live in today.
