Birthday of ENIAC’s cofounder | John Presper Eckert is born | Techday, April 9th
On this TECHDAY in history, on April 9th 1919, John Presper Eckert, one of the two creators of the first computer in history, ENIAC, was born. An electrical engineer and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Engineering, Eckert was one of the pioneers of computers. He was not only the designer of ENIAC, but also co-founded the first computer company in the United States and the first commercial computer in history, UNIVAC.
In 1943, Eckert and his colleague, John Mauchly, began working on an electronic computer at the University of Pennsylvania. They completed the UNIVAC in 1951. The first UNIVAC computer was installed at the United States Census Bureau in 1952.
Eckert and Mauchly then formed their own company, the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation. It produced several other successful computer models, including the UNIVAC II and the UNIVAC 1103. In the late 1950s, they sold their company to Sperry Rand Corporation, and Eckert continued to work as an executive at the company until retirement in 1975.
Eckert was a pioneer in the field of computer science and engineering. His contributions to the development of electronic computers had a significant impact on the advancement of technology. He received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the National Medal of Science and the Computer Science Man of the Year award. Eckert passed away on June 1995 at the age of 76.
