European Geosafe project
The European SESAR network supports the European Commission’s “U-space” initiative. It’s a system that makes drones visible to the authorities and helps increase their air traffic. The “Geosafe” project is part of key services to develop the use of drones. Thales will manage the project supported by Aeromapper, AirMap, Atechsys and SPH Engineering.
To keep drones safe, geofencing technologies help indicate where they should fly to avoid dangerous locations. They also minimize the risk of accidents. They can ensure that drones do not fly in protected perimeters around critical infrastructure such as power plants or airports. The aim of this project is to apply state-of-the-art geofencing solutions to U-space legislation. Another aim is to propose improvements and recommendations for the future definition of the geolocation system.
“Geosafe” is a project that will involve driving test drones over the course of a year to evaluate different levels of accuracy and efficiency in order to create an improved geofencing system.
Thales
Thales is designing ultra-secure systems intended solely for the air transport of the future. The company with a global reach of drones for military use, aircraft electronics and air traffic management, The group will conduct all the tests for the European geofencing system, suggest new options for it and produce a proposal of the project’s findings
“Thales is playing a leading role in shaping the autonomous world,” said Christian Bardot, Thales Vice President in charge of helicopters and the UAV avionics division. “Together with the SESAR JU network and our Geosafe partners, we will strengthen the foundations of drone safety experiments by exploiting the potential of this huge market.”
The trial will include 280 flights and is designed to test all possible situations a drone can encounter in urban and rural areas.
