The Airbus experimental aircraft | Maveric
It’s called Maveric and is likely the next generation of passenger planes. Airbus has designed a new airplane that is unlike anything we’ve seen before. They claim it will have huge efficiency gains and other features, too.
And while many things have changed since early passenger travel in the 50s, especially in terms of safety and comfort, the nature of airplanes is pretty much the same After all, what else can you do in terms of fuselage shape? If you’re Airbus, there’s always something interesting to grab onto! The European manufacturer unveiled this airplane that flies on 20% less fuel than traditional jets.
The sleek black design of the triangular wing Maveric makes it a tough to distinguish where the wings are and where the fuselage starts. The design has created a uniform thrust throughout the fuselage. In an industry where efficiency micro-improvements yield 1%-2% which means little tweaking of the wings or engine, that 20% Airbus tells us is huge.
The Maveric also has a couple of other major benefits. When flying over ground-level with engines housed below the fuselage, it’s considerably quieter than other models. And it can now accommodate a range of new engine types – all-electric or hybrid models
Radical redesigning a passenger aircraft is much more difficult than it sounds. Airbus is showing off their latest project and will go back to the lab for more research afterwards.
And without a timetable or commitment, we can only imagine what it would be like. For now, let’s keep dreaming.
