The ‘brain’ behind the Pixel’s camera has left Google | Marc Levoy resigns
Algorithms have come to prominence in the world of computational photography. Google’s Pixel phones are achieving better results with a single camera than competing flagships with four cameras for good reason- Google’s software doesn’t need to be as flashy, or have all that sophisticated hardware on top of it. But it seems the team has been abandoned by the brains behind the Pixel’s camera technology, engineer Marc Levoy. In fact, his departure was quietly announced in March and only now surfaced after information from The Information.
The reason the Pixel 4 was not selling well turned out to be quite predictable. The two-part models of this phone had caused confusion to Google’s customers and it didn’t help that the new device had several hardware issues that could be traced back to its manufacturing. Google’s new Pixel 4 phones have much shorter battery life than the Pixel 3. Rick Osterloh’s comment about the phone’s battery life coincides with Google engineers’ complaints about the phone, who informed the hardware head that they wouldn’t be able to buy replacement batteries after a year.
After Levoy’s departure, Pixel division general manager Mario Queiroz and company left for the same reason. Questions about the future of photography at Google remain, as does the future of Pixel itself.
Have you already heard that Marc Levoy resigns from Google?
