The use of Zoom worldwide

The pandemic has boosted the use of Zoom all around the world, but also in Greece. Worryingly, many people are still concerned about it being safe for them.

What are the things that can be used by both children and prime ministers? The new coronavirus has caused a huge pandemic and has kept humanity from going out during the day. Around half of people have stayed home. Zoom saw its usage skyrocket around the world, with Greece ranking among the countries with the most users. One by one, people are downloading and installing Zoom in order to chat with other people who use this app. One hundred people can be in a video conference at once.

Zoom has been the number 1 application in the US for a while now. It’s no different in the UK as well. The British Prime Minister shared a picture of himself chairing a cabinet meeting on Zoom last week, which left some people questioning whether this was safe. According to research, Zoom has almost 3x as many US users in March as Microsoft’s Team has. Zoom’s daily users reached 4.84 million in the US, when compared to 1.56 million of Teams, who target a more professional audience and nearly 500,000 of Slack. On the App Store, Zoom is often at the top of the list for apps with the most downloads.

Now that telecommuting is the norm, Zoom has become a popular tool for the population of workers who need to work from home. Not only are adults dependent on Zoom, but also students attending both online and offline classes. Zoom itself does not disclose its statistics but, according to an app analytics company, Zoom’s active users were 151% more in March this year than they were in the same month last year.

You can use Zoom to make video and audio calls, meet in groups, or just stay productive. Analysts believe that Zoom’s popularity is due to its simplicity and simplistic design, as it can be easily downloaded on a multitude of devices. They also provide their more advanced features for a price.

Zoom’s increased popularity does not automatically translate into profits for Zoom Communications Inc., according to the company’s CFO. She remarks that “We’ve certainly seen an increase in usage, but a lot of it is about our free app.” Shares of Zoom Communication, the California based company, have increased in value very quickly, doubling from $36 to $150. The founder of the company, who was born in China, Eric Yuan (who owns 20% of the company’s shares) is said to have added at least four billion dollars to his personal fortune since the outbreak of this virus, His fortune has now reached 8 billion dollars, making him the 182nd richest person on Earth. This surpasses George Soros. The Guardian says so.

This is not to say that there’s no downside to the use of Zoom. Among the questions we’ve been asking ourselves is whether it’s secure enough and if they’re safeguarding your private data as best they can be. New York Attorney General has expressed its concerns about the massive uptick in use and how we’re safeguarding people’s security and privacy. Recently, there were security vulnerabilities in the app and it had been slow to resolve them. A company spokesperson insisted that “Zoom takes the privacy, security and trust of its users too seriously.” He also said that they are in contact with the Ministry of Defence and National Cyber Security Centre to ensure the security of the app.
