The first autonomous helicopter

The Ehang 184, a self-governing autonomous helicopter designed for use as a passenger transport will be available to hire from July. It can carry up to 220 pounds of weight and is designed to fly over city blocks for 30 minutes at a time.

The drone has no steering wheel or other instruments in the cabin- the passenger simply selects their destination on a touch-screen and the system does the rest on its own.

The drone prototype was unveiled during the 2016 CES technology show in Los Angeles. A few months later, in June, Nevada gave the green light for test flights. The Ehang 184 flies with four propellers and has a top speed of 160 km/h. It can fly for 30 minutes and distances up to 50 km with an available cargo weight of 100 kilo.

However, Ehang’s drone won’t hold the title of first passenger drone for long. Google and Airbus have similar plans and Urban Aeronautics wants to start testing a military-use passenger drone in 2017.
